A woman was found severely intoxicated on the floor, oblivious to a naked, crying 5-month-old infant lying beside her Thursday evening in Portage, court documents show.
Julie Ann Leon, 45, of the 2000 block of Damon Street in Portage, now faces a Level 6 felony charge of neglect of a dependent. She
is accused by her actions of endangering the child’s life, a probable cause statement says.
Leon also faces a Level 6 felony battery count and a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement for kicking a Portage Police officer at the Northwest Health-Portage facility and persistently refusing to follow orders from arresting officers, documents state.
The woman was at her residence, in charge of taking care of the 5-month old infant. A man came to the residence at 6:20 p.m. Thursday and discovered Leon on the floor in an inebriated state with the naked, crying infant lying beside her, court documents said.
When Portage Police officers took her into custody, she tried to pull away. One officer asked, “Are you going to continue to resist actively?” and Leon replied, “Yes.”
The resistance continued when Leon was transported to the Northwest Health-Portage facility, 3620 Willowcreek Road.
Police officers were trying to secure Leon in a hospital bed. She glared angrily at one officer, demanding that he look at her, and then kicked that officer in the left leg, court documents show.
Leon is being held at the Porter County Jail in lieu of a $2,500 cash bond.
