GWAR Set To Slaughter Louisville March 31

Tuesday, March 31GWAR, Soulfly, and King ParrotMercury Ballroom | 611 S. 4th St. | mercuryballroom.com | $46.95 (general admission) | 7:30 p.m. | All ages
I hope you have your last will and testament filled out and your affairs in order, because GWAR is coming!
Ahead of the tour, which begins
March 19th in the band’s hometown of Richmond, VA, lead vocalist The Berserker Blothar gives a preview of what to expect: “GWAR, Soulfly, and King Parrot. This tour will be a ritual orgy of death, sex, violence, and rock and fucking roll!! Let the severed heads rain, bouncing down the pyramid onto a heap of human skulls. Be there, humans, or be left to suffer on this planet while we party in the stars”!
Yes, both GWAR and Soulfly are indeed scheduled to play this year’s Louder Than Life, and you certainly can catch them both then. But here’s the thing: they both play on separate days, they both go on early and will be playing in broad daylight, and their sets will be limited to a half-hour each. This is not the ideal setting for either band. Soulfly has almost 30 years’ worth of material that can’t effectively be crammed into a short set. And GWAR is an experience made for a venue the size of Mercury Ballroom, (and it is definitely an experience!)
Having seen GWAR at least 25 times over the past thirty years (I’ve lost count at this point), I can honestly say that there is no such thing as a bad GWAR show. Their worst show is still more fun than pretty much any other band’s best show. Slapstick comedy, ridiculous sleaze, and over-the-top campy horror all meet head-on live on stage, and the audience reaps the rewards/pays the price as fake blood and other assorted fake bodily fluids rain down on the crowd. Even if you don’t like the music, everyone should experience a GWAR show at least once in their life, as there is literally nothing else like it! Don’t want to get soaked? Stand in the back, but you’ll miss out on the fun. Otherwise, anything you’re wearing that’s white will be red when you leave. No, that’s not a joke; that’s a guarantee. Pro tip: bring several towels to leave in the car for afterwards. Past just drying off, you’re going to need dry ones for everyone in the car to sit on, unless, of course, you enjoy scrubbing food coloring out of your car seats. I speak from experience.
Interesting fact: Louisville’s own Jamison Land, (now of Belushi Speed Ball), was once a member of GWAR, playing the role of bassist Beefcake The Mighty from 2011-2019; performing on two studio albums and several world tours with the band.
Legendary metal band Soulfly, fronted by ex-Sepultura vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera, (whom I had the pleasure of interviewing for LEO Weekly prior to his playing Louder Than Life last year with his other band, Cavalera), and Australian grind/thrash/punk band King Parrot, who are no strangers to interjecting low-brow humor into their music and most certainly their videos, open.
