Police pick up nonverbal child wandering street alone in MentorontheLake
Mar 01, 2026
According to a post on the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department Facebook page, at about 1:55 p.m. on Feb. 27, officers responded to a report of a young child wandering in the middle of the roadway in the 7700 block of Primrose Drive.
A resident observed a 4-year-old boy walking alone in the street.
The caller reported that the child was barefoot, had a soiled diaper, had no pants, and was wearing a long-sleeve shirt. The caller did not recognize the child and immediately contacted the department.
Officers arrived promptly and safely took custody of the child.
During their interaction, officers observed indicators that the child was non-verbal and possibly on the autism spectrum, according to the post.
Approximately 30 minutes after officers took custody of the child, the boy’s father contacted the police department to report his son missing. Officers quickly coordinated with the father, and the child was safely reunited with his family.
According to the post, the department maintains a Special Needs Registry designed to assist first responders in identifying and safely returning individuals who may have difficulty communicating or responding to traditional commands.
The registry is available on the City’s website at www.mentoronthelake.gov.
Forms may also be picked up or dropped off at the police department at any time. Residents who have previously completed a registry are encouraged to update their information annually to ensure accuracy.
