But the top-seeded Knights hadn’t played a game closer than 23 points in four CIF Southern Section playoff games and had won their last eight games by at least 20.
Saturday, they were tested but they appeared to be passing the test, leading for nearly all of the first three quarters.
But instead of pulling away in the fourth quarter for an 11th straight win, it was No. 3 Sierra Canyon who surged in the final minutes for a 69-62 victory in the CIF-SS Open Division championship game at Toyota Arena.
Ontario Christian was looking to win back-to-back titles, while the Trailblazers won their first title since 2023.
“Let me give Sierra Canyon a lot of credit,” Ontario Christian coach Aundre Cummings said. “They have a group of seniors over there who appreciated being in this moment. We have a lot of kids who didn’t appreciate being in this moment. But it’s OK, they’ll learn now.
“When you have a group of players that are younger trying to figure out how to grow within games, they look at a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter and say, ‘we’ve got it.’ But mature players will say, ‘we haven’t done anything yet. We have to keep pressing.’”
The Knights led by as many as nine points in the first three quarters and led 56-51 entering the fourth quarter. But they surrendered the lead for the first time since the game’s opening 2 minutes when sophomore Rosie Oladokun made a 3-pointer to put Sierra Canyon up 60-58 with 5:11 to play.
The Knights’ last basket came on a Kaleena Smith jumper with 4:14 to play that tied the score at 62-62.
Two free throws by senior Jerzy Robinson with 3 minutes left gave the Trailblazers the lead for good.
Ontario Christian had no answer all night for the South Carolina-bound Robinson, who scored a game-high 32 points on 9-of-19 shooting (3 of 5 on 3-pointers) while making 11 of 12 free throws.
“We really wanted to get this for Jerzy,” Sierra Canyon coach Alicia Komaki said.
Senior Oregon-bound Emilia Krstevski added 10 points and seven rebounds, and fellow senior Delaney White battled through foul trouble to also score 10 points.
“This group is so special,” Komaki said. “I think that if we just believed we were special, and that this was our time and we were good enough and smart enough and prepared enough … And they did.”
Smith, a junior, led Ontario Christian with 30 points on 12-of-24 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, and junior Dani Robinson added 16 points. Freshman Chloe Jenkins had six points and 10 rebounds.
But it was a rough night for sophomore Tatianna Griffin, who shot just 2 of 16 from the field, scored only six points and grabbed five rebounds. Senior Layia King struggled with foul trouble, scoring only two points before fouling out in less than 18 minutes.
“I think we gave up on ourselves,” Smith said. “We’ve been in these situations and continued to fight, but I feel like the fight wasn’t there (Saturday). It’s a learning lesson.”
This isn’t the end of the season for either team, as both will be in the CIF State Open Division playoffs. But this time, Sierra Canyon will be seeded No. 1.
