Monsters beat Penguins, 21, in overtime, improve to 106 in OT
Feb 28, 2026
The Monsters excel at playing more than 60 minutes of hockey. They love playing in front of big crowds.
Both things happened Feb. 28 in front of 14,408 fans in Rocket Arena when Jack Williams scored 1:55 into overtime to give the Monsters a well-earned 2-1 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Peng
uins less than 24 hours after the Penguins nipped the Monsters, 3-2, with 13,190 fans in attendance.
The Feb. 28 game was scrappy. The Penguins seemed determined to lure Monsters players into fights. The Monsters players didn’t back down, but neither did they let the Penguins throw them off their game.

“I thought it was solid all around,” Coach Trent Vogelhuber said. “A little wobbly in the second period with special teams and whistles. The biggest thing was our start.
“I thought we came out with intent. It was the first time in a few games we scored the first goal, so that was nice. And then I thought we had a good push for a good chunk of the third.”
The goal by Williams was his 11th of the season and fourth game-winner. Williams took a backhand pass from Guillaume Richard about 10 feet inside the blue line on the left side of the ice, cut across to the right and fired the puck under the blocker of Penguins goalie Sergei Murashov.
It was the eighth win on home ice in nine games at Rocket Arena. The Monsters (28-17-6-1) are 10-6 in overtime this season. They are 3-1 in shootouts,
The Monsters took a 1-0 lead at 6:21 of the first period when Zach Aston-Reese, standing on the inside edge of the left circle, redirected a shot by Richard from the left point just inside the left post. Murashov, set up in the center of the crease, had no chance to react when Aston-Reese made the puck change course. It was the fourth goal of the season for the 31-year-old left wing from Staten Island, N.Y.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second period when Roman Ahchan was sent to the penalty box for slashing at 15:34, 29 seconds after Richard drew a two-minute penalty for interference. The Monsters were tasked with killing off a 5-on-3 Wilkes-Barre power play for 1:31.
Five seconds after the penalty to Richard expired, Penguins defenseman Matt Dumba blasted a shot into the top right corner of the net behind Monsters goalie Ivan Fedotov to tie the game and set up the drama of the tense third period and overtime.
Fedotov stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced. Murashov made 27 saves.
