P.E. is supposed to be the place where you go to have fun, and get a break from all the reading and math, but at Moss Haven Elementary in Richardson ISD they have mixed it up a bit. “We choose one person to say stop, and when they do that, we add together all our numbers,” said Mattie Koch. They’re doing addition and basketball at the same time; they call it brain ball.  “Brain ball is a way to incorporate literacy and math into physical education,” said Christina Fuller, physical education teacher on campus. “You will work your brain and your body when you’re in this class.” She works with the math teachers and reviews what the kids are taught in math, as part of PE. Class starts out with new drills in basketball, from dribbling to passing. The kids have to master their skills on the court.  Each basketball has a number on it, and that number helps Coach Fuller suddenly become Ms. Fuller, the math teacher.   “Is your number divisible by 3 or not divisible by 3?” she asked while tossing the kids’ basketballs. “Adding math and like exercise is just, I don’t know that I would have come up with that honestly,” said Oliver LeDoux, one of the students in the class, but he sure loved doing it. Eliza Brinkman, Ellie Van Ande and Mattie Koch got a little lost at one point. They started adding when they should have been doing multiplication. The math goes fast, just like a basketball game, and if you mess up, there are consequences. They had to do 10 curl-ups.  “That’s what encourages us to do the math,” said Brinkman. “I mean, it sounds funny, but even at night, I dream of games. I’ll tell them, alright, I thought of a new game last night while I was sleeping,” said Coach Fuller. It’s also helped the kids who don’t enjoy PE. They’re able to flex their math brains in gym class. Even though I didn’t like math or PE in school, I had fun. Wesley and Camille let me join their team, and I didn’t have to do any pull-ups. ...read more read less
