(KRON) -- Four decades after a 21-year-old college student was slain in San Jose, detectives have reopened the investigation to find the killer. On Thursday, the San Jose Police Department released new details in the case to the public. Kelly Ralston was living in an apartment in the 4900 block of Edgar Court when on Aug. 28, 1984, she was killed in a violent struggle, police said. Officers responded to the home after her roommate discovered Ralston suffering from multiple traumatic injuries. Authorities said a knife was recovered from the scene. Kelly Ralston, 21, was killed in her San Jose apartment on August 28, 1984. More than 40 years later, SJPD detectives are renewing their cold case homicide investigation to find her killer. A recent reexamination of the cold case homicide found that a description of the suspect was never disclosed to the public, according to police. “The person described the possible suspect as White male adult, approximately 5’7” to 5’8” in height, 32-35 years old, with a thin build and strawberry blond hair,” SJPD wrote. “A review of the case file also identified a separate 2005 anonymous tip that indicated that the possible suspect likely lived in the area at the time of the crime.” Police detectives and investigators with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office Cold Case Unit are now working to determine if advancements in forensic technology or new information may help solve the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Barragan at [email protected]  or Detective Harrington at [email protected], or call the SJPD Homicide Unit at 408-277-5283. Anonymous tips can be made at 408-947-STOP. ...read more read less
