A motorist was killed this week in Rialto when a man fleeing police in a stolen SUV allegedly ran a red light and broadsided another vehicle at Highland and Pepper avenues, fatally injuring the 39-year-old driver. Emanuel Ayala, 33, of Bloomington was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga following his arrest at 9:23 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, felony evading resulting in death and possession of a stolen vehicle. Bail initially was set at $60,000, but at the request of police Ayala now is being held without bail, according to online booking records. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court. Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said the 2018 Dodge Journey was stolen from the parking lot of Citrus Suites at 1230 W. Colton Ave. after a woman dropped her keys in the parking and didn’t realize it. When she returned to pick them up, the keys and her vehicle were gone. “She also realized she left the phone in her car,” Baker said, and that enabled police to track the vehicle to an apartment complex near Riverside Avenue and Baseline Road. Rialto police dispatchers received a call from Redlands police at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday reporting the location of the stolen SUV. When a Rialto police officer attempted to pull the vehicle over near the apartment complex, Ayala sped off. A pursuit involving three officers ensued — north on Riverside Avenue, then east on Easton Street to Highland Avenue, reaching speeds of 70 to 100 mph, police said. At the intersection of Highland and Pepper, Ayala allegedly ran a red light and collided with the vehicle driven by Marcus Loring of San Bernardino. It was unclear Tuesday how fast Ayala was driving when he struck Loring, who was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and died at 10:02 p.m., according to a Rialto Police Department news release. Ayala suffered minor injuries. At the request of the Rialto Police Department, the San Bernardino Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting an independent investigation into the collision. Police said Ayala has “an extensive criminal past” that include 30 arrests for previous felony convictions, including auto theft and evading police, as well as for theft and narcotics offenses, all of which demonstrated a “lack of care for public safety.” Anyone with additional information about the accident is encouraged to contact the Rialto Police Department.
