CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Carmel city government plans to crack down further on parking violators, saying Wednesday it will enhance enforcement in the coming months to support business needs and improve access for residents and visitors. The Carmel Police Department plans to deploy technology i n its vehicles and add two part-time enforcement officers to address a recent increase in parking violations, and no additional funding appropriations beyond the department’s 2026 budget were expected, said a news release issued Wednesday. Revenue from violation fines will be used to support the continuation of the enforcement program. A recent enforcement expansion was noted as evidence of potential success. After the city added a single parking officer nearly a year ago, the city saw a 58% increase in the identification of parking violations. The release did not provide details on the extent of the continued rise in parking violations, but said business owners and residents have expressed concerns regarding parking compliance, specifically noting a rise in unauthorized parking in loading zones and marked disability spots. The release also noted reports of an increase in drivers remaining in 15-minute or three-hour parking spaces past the posted time limits. The violations have contributed to traffic congestion and hindered accessibility in the downtown commercial district, the release said. Also, the release said, the police department, the city’s engineering department and the Carmel City Council are creating a parking study, which could lead to more recommendations for the city’s parking infrastructure and enforcement in the future. ...read more read less
