Colts’ Chris Ballard shares update on contract discussions with Daniel Jones
Feb 24, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Daniel Jones is set to become an unrestricted free agent and Colts general manager Chris Ballard shared an update on where they are in contract negotiations.
“We’ll continue to work this week and see if we can get something done,” Ballard said. “It’s been ver
y positive. Look, when both sides are driven to get it done, it usually works out in the right way. I know four or five days doesn’t seem like a long time, but it can be in these situations. Both the player, they’re driven, we’re driven, the agents have been great to work with. We just got to keep working through it.”
Jones was excellent for the Colts in 2025. He threw for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He completed 68% of his passes, the highest mark of his career. Jones also added five rushing touchdowns. The Colts were 8-5 in games that he started.
Jones is currently recovering from a torn Achilles that he suffered on December 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ballard said Jones’ recovery has been good and that he’s on track. Ballard feels good about where Jones is at, but does not want to put a timeline on his return.
Ballard said the plan is for Jones, as well as wide receiver Alec Pierce, who is also set to be a free agent, to be back with the Colts.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen shared what Jones brought to the team in 2025.
“The way he works and the way he goes about his business and his preparation is phenomenal,” Steichen said. “What he was able to do before the injury was awesome for us. Obviously a very talented player, sees the game well, can get us in and out of the right plays, which was huge. So obviously, we’re in talks now with him and hopefully something will work out here soon.”
The Colts signed Jones to a one-year, $14 million deal ahead of the 2025 season.
