For nearly three centuries, downtown’s Main Plaza has functioned as San Antonio’s common ground. Now, city leaders are planning for the future with an anticipated renovation set to begin in summer 2027. The city and the Main Plaza Conservancy are mostly focusing on accessibility, but the improve ments will also include new amenities to keep the historic square active beyond major events like Fiesta. Plans call for regrading surfaces, upgrading restrooms, and improving seating to ensure safer access for wheelchair users, caregivers with strollers, and anyone who struggles with uneven terrain.The proposed updates also make room for enhanced gathering areas, expanded green space, new furniture and surfacing, improved pedestrian circulation, and a pavilion for performances and other community events.
