PLYMOUTH, Ind. (WISH) — A Marshall County Sheriff’s Office SUV was struck Monday morning on an icy U.S. 31 as a deputy responded to a separate crash, Indiana State Police said in a news release issued in the afternoon. State police Trooper Andrew Barker, who investigated the crash, thinks a gold Chevrolet van lost control on the slick highway during lake-effect snowfall and hit the Deputy Matthew Brown’s parked SUV about 7:30 a.m. Monday on northbound U.S. 31 near 13th Road. That’s a rural area about halfway between the city of Plymouth and the town of Argos in the northern Indiana county. Deputies arrested Carlos Alexis Flores Hernandez, 30, of Peru, Ind., after they determined he did not have a driver’s license. Online court records on Monday night did not show a case filed against Flores Hernandez. Brown was evaluated at a hospital and later released. The patrol SUV had its emergency lights activated as it was sideswiped by the van, the release said. Marshall County, with about 46,300 residents, is located south of St. Joseph County and its county seat, South Bend. The release noted that Indiana state law requires drivers to move over or slow down for stationary emergency vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles, and disabled vehicles displaying flashing hazard lights. ...read more read less
