Four in custody after juveniles open fire during police chase, 3 hospitalized

INDIANAPOLIS Three teenagers were hospitalized, and an adult was taken into custody Saturday evening following an officer-involved shooting on the city's far east side, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Departme
nt.According to police, just before 10 p.m., IMPD's Violent Crimes Task Force and SWAT team were following a car occupied by individuals believed to be involved in a recent shooting.Police said SWAT officers attempted to "grapple" the vehicle at some point during the pursuit. Someone inside the car then began shooting at officers, and at least one officer returned fire.The car eventually came to a stop, and three teenage males and an adult male were taken into custody.Three teens from the vehicle were transported to the hospital two with gunshot wounds and one with injuries not believed to be from gunfire. All three are listed in stable conditionthe fourth suspect, an adult man, was uninjured and detained for questioning. IMPD said at least one department vehicle was damaged by gunfire. A rifle and a handgun were found inside the suspect car.IMPD said they do not believe anyone uninvolved was injured in the incident. There is no ongoing threat to the public.Tenth Street is closed between German Church Road and Washington Point Drive as officers investigate the scene. IMPD is asking people to avoid the area, as officers will be on scene for several hours working to confirm what occurred.The officer who shot his gun was wearing a body-worn camera and it was activated, according to police.The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is leading the criminal investigation. A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. As standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave.Following the criminal investigation, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing regarding the attempted use of deadly force.Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt.
