Yes, Sunday’s storm could bring record snowfall totals to parts of the tri-state and create chaos on the roads, especially overnight Sunday through the Monday morning commute. But snow and wind aren’t the only threat. Coastal spots of the tri-state could see flooding as well, particularly low-lying areas near the shore. A coastal flood warning was issued for Sunday night across Long Island, New York City, the Jersey Shore and coastal parts of Westchester and Fairfield counties north of NYC. The Jersey Shore and south shore of Long Island were bracing to face the worst conditions from the storm, especially during high tide. Those areas could face 2.5 feet of inundation, while also at risk for getting some of the largest snow totals across the region — with two feet of snow possible. Power outages were also most likely along the coast. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said officials were anticipating possible flooding in Jamaica Bay, on Staten Island and in The Battery, at the very bottom of Manhattan. “If that occurs, the city will deploy field response teams and determine further interagency actions from DEP,” Mamdani said during a press conference Saturday. The strongest winds will be at the shore as well. Gusts could top 50 mph and continue for extended periods, helping fuel the coastal flooding that comes in part due to high tide overnight. That could lead to plenty of road closures and flooding in vulnerable or low-lying areas.
