RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia saw more people moving to the state from different states than people leaving in Virginia in both 2023 and 2024, according to Virginia Realtors.
Citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Sejal Naik, deputy chief economist with Virginia Realtors -- the largest trade a

In 2023, however, Virginia Realtors noted that this trend reversed, with more people moving into Virginia from different states than those leaving the Commonwealth.
Virginia Realtors added that the net positive migration flow continued in 2024, with around 265,500 people moving to other parts of the country, including Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, while nearly 264,000 people moved out of Virginia to other parts of the U.S.
The trade association said the top five states from where people moved to Virginia were Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, California and New York.
During the same time, prior Virginia residents' top destinations to move were reportedly Florida, North Carolina, Maryland, California, and Texas were the top destinations for a move.
Virginia Realtors added that the highest levels of net migration inflows for Virginia were with New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina and D.C. The highest levels of net migration outflows for the Commonwealth were reportedly North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, Colorado, and Maryland.
