Beech Grove candlelight vigil honors slain police officer, from News 8 at 11 p.m. BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) — Hundreds of people from the Beech Grove community and other people from across central Indiana came together Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil honoring fallen officer Brian Elliot t. They lit candles symbolizing hope, an homage to Elliott. He was fatally shot Monday afternoon while responding to a violent domestic call involving Kenneth T. Johnson and his girlfriend at the Beech Meadow apartments, an Indiana State Police trooper’s report to Marion Superior Court 20 revealed Tuesday. Elliott, 33, a member of the Beech Grove Police Department since September 2024, died at Eskenazi Hospital, the department’s chief announced just before 9:30 p.m. Monday. Sophia Taylor, a Beech Grove resident, attended the vigil. “It’s eye-opening and for this to happen 5 minutes from my house. It’s tragic. To see everybody out here it’s like family that’s been brought together through this tragic time.” Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice said Elliott was more than his badge. He was funny. He was a guy’s guy who loved motorcycles and rock ‘n’ roll. “What they did that night no doubt saved lives and my officers all have that, but Brian was one of the best of us, and just his courage and under fire, it’s just unbelievable. But, Brian would be upset that there’s this much attention on him. But, he would be proud of how the community came together and lifted everyone up.”The police chief said Elliott’s family attended the vigil, standing with the crowd participating in it. People paid their respects, even those who didn’t know Elliott personally. They left flowers, stuffed toys, and trinkets. They wanted to honor the man who risked his life to protect their community. Liam Matchett traveled from Greenfield. “I just feel so bad for the police officer and the family. I want to be a paramedic when I grow up, so this loss is devastating not just for Beech Grove but honestly the entire state.” The police chief said the memorial outside the Beech Grove police station will be up all week. ...read more read less
