INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ryan Coleman, owner and CEO of Omni Fitness, said building momentum through discipline is more effective for long-term health than relying on inconsistent motivation, particularly as many New Year’s resolutions begin to fade in February.
Coleman
said motivation is an emotional state that can fluctuate, while momentum is created through repeated actions and sustainable habits.
He said consistency does not always require high-intensity workouts but instead depends on maintaining routines, even in small ways, during challenging seasons. He also emphasized the role of community support and accountability in helping individuals stay committed to their health goals.
Coleman said discipline provides structure when motivation is lacking and that having an established routine makes it easier to maintain workouts during difficult periods. He said most of the battle is simply showing up.
He also addressed the common belief that habits form in 21 days, arguing that lasting change often takes longer. Coleman said repetition over time helps transform consistent behaviors into part of a person’s identity.
Coleman recently applied those principles while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He referenced the late Kobe Bryant, who described his own recovery from the injury as a personal Mount Everest. Coleman said setting clear goals and leaning on community support helped him stay disciplined throughout his rehabilitation.
At Omni Fitness, the focus remains on year-round progress rather than short-term goals tied to specific events such as weddings or vacations. Coleman said life events will occur regardless of fitness plans, making it more important to maintain momentum and adapt to challenges rather than wait for ideal circumstances.
