Jazzy Davidson’s freshman season has been anything but typical. And yet, she’s made it the norm to earn Freshman of the Week honors and score more than any of her USC teammates – many of whom have much more college basketball experience than her. “She makes kind of ridiculous stats look fair ly ordinary for her, and they’re not ordinary,” Trojans head coach Lindsay Gottlieb told reporters. Davidson just added a sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor to her awards haul this season and was one of two freshmen to be named to the Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Late-Season Team earlier this week. She has her own player edition Sabrina 3 sneakers with Nike and is on Slam magazine’s latest college basketball cover. View this post on Instagram The 6-foot-1 guard’s game has stayed in bloom throughout the season and will remain a factor in the final stretch of the season, starting with a home game against Wisconsin (13-13 overall, 5-10 Big Ten) on Thursday. USC (16-9, 8-6) has been without star player JuJu Watkins all season as she recovers from a torn ACL, but it’s only made room for Davidson to grow and given her support. Watkins has been seen coaching up her younger teammate throughout the year, hugging her and appearing to give advice. “The support of my teammates and coaches puts all the confidence in me, and I’m just really grateful for that,” Davidson told reporters. The situation has allowed for Davidson, who was the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, to lead the Trojans in every major statistical category: 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.9 steals and 2.2 blocks per game. She’s averaging 24 points in the last three games. It’s all achieved while averaging a team-high workload of 34:20 minutes a game. She hasn’t been on the court for less than 25 minutes in any game this season. “Talk about overdelivering,” Gottlieb said. “To be a freshman and carry the load that she carries for us and continue to grow, the numbers are really showing it, but we’ve seen for a long time that she’s just capable of doing almost anything on a basketball court.” Davidson’s ability to make reads and off-ball plays has also gotten teammates like Kara Dunn and Kennedy Smith involved. Dunn is second on the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game and Smith is third with 11 points per game. “They have a real ability to find each other – whoever it is,” Gottlieb said. The group has USC on a five-game winning streak and is sitting at No. 21 in the latest NET rankings released Tuesday. The Trojans are one of nine Big Ten teams in the Top 25 of those rankings. Wisconsin, which is on a six-game losing streak, is not one of those teams. But the Badgers could still be a threat with players like 6-foot-3 forward Gift Uchenna Okeke, who is fourth in the conference with 1.4 blocks a game and averages a team-best seven rebounds. It’s also a team that’s desperate for a win after falling to opponents like No. 23 Minnesota – which handed them two losses – and No. 10 Ohio State in the last six games. “I just want it so bad for these young ladies,” Wisconsin head coach Robin Pingeton told reporters. “They work really hard. They’ve been phenomenal in that locker room. They’ve been so fun to coach. The hardest thing for me is I just want to see them succeed on the scoreboard. They are winners.” WISCONSIN (13-13 overall, 5-10 Big Ten) at USC (16-9, 8-6) When: 6 p.m. Thursday Where: Galen Center TV/Radio: Peacock/710 AM Related Articles USC football adds 3 more to its coaching staff USC men host No. 10 Illinois as NCAA Tournament bid looms Alexander: Readers submit their favorite SoCal sports moments USC women beat Indiana to extend win streak to 5 games USC DC Gary Patterson finds harmony in football and music ...read more read less
