With three Olympic gold medals and eight world championships, Mikaela Shiffrin is indisputably the greatest alpine ski racer of all time. She’s won more World Cup ski races than any other person — 108, to be exact. And she’s been on the podium more than 160 times. She’s also a four-ti me Team USA Olympian, having competed in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 Winter Olympics. She just wrapped up her competitive events at Milan Cortina.  WATCH LIVE: Mikaela Shiffrin’s last run at Milan Cortina But even the GOATs have their off-years. She came away empty-handed at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where she had three DNFs among her sixth events and finished as high as fourth.  In Milan Cortina, she placed fourth in her first event, the team combined, with downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson. var pymParent = new pym.Parent('olyLink7162', 'https://visuals.otsops.com/projects/milan-links-generator/visual-link.html?link=https://www.nbcolympics.com/videos/mikaela-shiffrin-simone-biles-reflect-olympic-journeystitle=Mikaela%20Shiffrin,%20Simone%20Biles%20reflect%20on%20Olympic%20journeysrand=7162image=https://images.nbcolympics.com/sites/default/files/post/short_form_video/2026/02/18/oly26_xx_hlf_7881_bilesshriffin_260217.jpg?impolicy=rect_medium_1024_576', {title: '', parenturlparam: '', parenturlvalue: ''}); And on Sunday, another podium miss for Shiffrin — this time in the giant slalom event, finishing in 11th place with a total time of 2:14.42. But who doesn’t love a redemption story? Twelve years after she earned her first Olympic gold, Shiffrin got the job done once more in the slalom, becoming a three-time Olympic champion and bringing another gold medal home to the United States. Good thing it's her best Sochi 2014 Shiffrin opened Olympic play-making history as the youngest ever winner of the Olympic slalom. At just 18 years old, Shiffrin finished 0.53 seconds faster than Austrian Marlies Schild. Three days later, she competed in the giant slalom, finishing fifth to cap off her first Games. PyeongChang 2018 Shiffrin scored two medals — gold in giant slalom and silver in the Combined. She missed the podium by just 0.08 seconds in the slalom. Beijing 2022 Shiffrin had a very different Games than anyone expected. She competed in six events at her third Olympic Winter Games, and would walk away without winning a medal. Shiffrin was disqualified from the giant slalom and slalom after missing gates early in her opening runs, and didn’t reach the bottom of the course in the second run of the Combined. In the super-G, Shiffrin placed ninth, 0.79 seconds behind the gold medalist, Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland. She also competed in the downhill for the first time at the Olympics, placing 18th. She finished fourth in her last event, mixed team parallel. Milan Cortina 2026 Shiffrin got off to a slower start in Milan Cortina. After teammate Breezy Johnson built a sizable lead in the team combined, Shiffrin finished 15th of 18 racers in the slalom leg. She wasn’t expected to medal in the giant slalom. In November 2024, Shiffrin crashed in a giant slalom race and hasn’t raced the event consistently since. She only returned this past January. She walked away from the Olympic course with an 11th-place finish and more motivation for Wednesday’s slalom. Shiffrin wouldn’t just win gold in the slalom. She would win gold with a combined time of 1:39:10 — 1.5 seconds ahead of Switzerland’s Camille Rast, who would take home the silver medal. She’s now the most decorated American female alpine skier ever. Talk about a legacy. ...read more read less
