A simple mistake can lead to disastrous results in figure skating. Amber Glenn, one of the members of Team USA’s “Blade Angels,” found herself in 13th place following Tuesday’s short program after missing a single rotation in the air. The 26-year-old Texas native was second to last ou t of 29 skaters in the start order and heavily favored to perform well at these Winter Olympics. Glenn nailed the triple axel in her short program, the hardest jump of the program and a move only performed by one other athlete in the competition. It was her triple loop that proved to be a problem. At the halfway point of her program, Glenn was supposed to complete the triple loop but instead only managed a double loop. Because she was not able to complete the necessary turns, the move was marked invalid and she received zero points. Losing the technical points proved detrimental to her overall score. Glenn ended with a score of 67.39, landing her in 13th and well below the podium pack. Glenn wasn’t the only skater to miss her triple loop. Canada’s Madeline Schizas also delivered a double loop instead of the triple. But unlike Schizas, Glenn will still qualify for Thursday’s skate. The emotion was clear on Glenn’s face as she wrapped her skate and broke out in tears heading over to her coaches. Glenn trails both of her fellow “Blade Angels.” She enters the free skate in 13th, while Isabeau Levito earned eighth position. Alysa Liu leads the American women in third position after the short program. The 20-year-old is behind Japanese skaters Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto. Mone Chiba, a third Japanese skater, is right behind in fourth. One country has never had three women on the figure skating podium. Heading into Thursday’s free skate, Japan has a chance of making history if it can keep Liu out of the top three.
