A police chase that began in Grand Prairie ended with police gunfire and a major freeway shutdown in Carrollton early Tuesday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The pursuit stretched across multiple cities before officials said it ended at about 3 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the President George Bush Turnpike near Old Denton Road. DPS said shots were fired by officers, and the incident is being investigated as an officer-involved shooting. It is unclear whether there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the driver and officials have not confirmed whether anyone was injured. The Texas DPS has not said what started the chase, what caused the crash, or what prompted the gunfire. An NBC 5 crew at the scene saw a vehicle flipped upside down in the grass off the right side of the freeway. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the area, and more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles lined the roadway. The Texas DPS confirmed the activity began overnight in Grand Prairie. The chase ended when the driver’s vehicle crashed and overturned. Firefighters and police officers from Irving, Grand Prairie and Carrollton responded to the scene. Both Irving and Carrollton police departments referred questions to DPS, which — along with the Texas Rangers — is leading the investigation. The eastbound lanes of the President George Bush Turnpike were shut down for about five hours, significantly impacting the Tuesday morning commute. The lanes reopened around 8:30 a.m. A DPS spokesperson said more information about the investigation is expected to be released.
