COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Three years after losing her nephew in a murder that's never been solved, one woman is now sharing how she has coped with her grief in a memoir, in hopes she can help others. Phyllis Hudson raised her nephew, then 19-year-old Marcus Johnson, as her son. When he was found dead in what's now a cold case, she was shocked and filled with grief. But, through her faith, she said she found strength, and now she's sharing those lessons in a memoir to help others heal. "I think about him every day," Hudson said about her nephew Marcus. He went missing in November 2022, and a month later, his body was found with multiple gunshot wounds under a tarp in Colonial Heights. Police have still not identified a suspect. "It still bothers me," Hudson said. "It's a lot of grief behind that because it's not a closure to it." Hudson said in addition to the grief, she felt guilt, for not being able to protect Marcus from whatever led to his death. "When grief happens, you feel like you did something wrong," Hudson said. "You feel ashamed that, like, you feel like you didn't do enough, and you feel guilty. A lot of things, negative things come in your spirit." She was also grieving her husband, Larry, who died from Covid a few years earlier. Hudson said these deaths made her isolated. Her home, once filled with life and love, turned unbearably quiet. But in her book, "Rising from the Ashes," she writes about how her faith in God helped guide her out of that dark period. "Writing this book, it took a lot," Hudson said. "Because it was kind of touchy to share my life tory with people. But I believe that once a person read this book, they will know that, look, there's no shame." The book covers Hudson's difficult upbringing in poverty, her struggles with health issues and depression and the losses in her family. All struggles she said putting her trust in God allowed her to overcome. "I wanted to give other people hope. To let them know that, no matter what happens in this life, that you can be transformed," Hudson said. "Sometimes the struggles that you go through is what God will allow in your life, to share it with somebody else." "Rising from the Ashes" by Phyllis Turner Hudson is available for purchase from Amazon. ...read more read less
