SC State announces new safety measures for entering and exiting campus following deadly shooting

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO-TV) — Students, faculty and staff, and guests will have to follow updated procedures to enter and leave the South Carolina State University (SCSU) campus starting Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026.
Monday, SCSU announced it is implementing updated entrance and exit procedur
es “…to strengthen campus security and improve traffic flow at key access points.”
When the updated procedures take effect Tuesday, students will be required to use Gate 4, the Goff/Buckley Streets Gate, to enter and exit campus.
They will also have to present a valid university student ID upon request. According to SCSU, students without appropriate credentials may be denied entry. Additionally, a properly issued parking decal must be displayed.
Gate 3, the Magnolia/Geathers Street Gate, will serve as primary access for faculty and staff. If necessary, Gate 5, the Chestnut Wilkinson Gate, will serve as secondary access.

Two people died and a student was injured after a shooting happened on campus Thursday, Feb. 12. The campus was put on lockdown during the incident. SLED is investigating.
