Hoosiers sing in support of Minneapolis INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Around 200 people gathered around the south side of monument circle. Music filled the circle as the group, “Indy Singing Resistance,” sang in support for Minneapolis. Organizers say the event was meant to send a “love lette r” to Minnesota and to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities close to home. They decided singing was a way to do things a bit differently. “I think it’s because you can have a collective voice and you don’t have to be good at it,” said demonstrator Jamie MacDougall. “The words are already there and it is something you believe in.” The event drew in a crowd of onlookers who stopped to listen. Demonstrators told News 8 that doing it in public spaces is intentional, hoping the music sparks conversations among people who may not otherwise interact. “We’ve seen the struggle and the hurt,” said demonstrator Heather Givans. “We just want to say that we love you and we stand with you. We say the same for our friends and families here in the community too.” One demonstrator, Mark Smith, said a lot of people have the wrong idea of why groups continue to gather. “I’m a democrat, okay. I don’t know any democrat who opposes deporting violent criminals. But that’s not what is happening. They are going after people who look a certain way and who speak a certain way,” said Smith. As the sun set, more people continue to gather around the circle. “I mean Indianapolis knows how to show up, there is no surprise. We just know how to show up for each other… and hopefully the first of many times we can get together and sing for our city and for one another,” said MacDougall. ...read more read less
