A rift between binary best buds of a popular local social media site has caused a breakup. Bill Kearney and Michael Ranallo, creators of Trenton Orbit on Facebook, an online dropbox for political opinion and other Trenton-centric topics, had a falling out about a post Kearney made to the New Jersey 101.5 radio station webpage. NJ 101.5 posted a story about three Black men from Trenton arrested for second-degree burglary of an occupied structure in a Somerset County neighborhood. Kearney responded with “Happy BH month”, alluding to Black History celebrations for the month of February. Screenshot from a post on the NJ 101.5 facebook page. Kearney, who works as manager of the Trenton Farmers Market, attracted responses that challenged his mindset. The political and social watchdog lamented the impulsive response that launched significant pushback. “It was one of those reactions when you type without giving much thought. It was more out of anger and frustration. Looking at what I wrote, I see why people are upset,” Kearney said during a face-to-face Saturday morning. Kearney said he decided to leave his post as an administrator of Trenton Orbit. He intends to offer no other response. His thoughts came after NJ 101.5 posted this article about the alleged crimes and subsequent arrests. Ranallo addressed the matter after responders bombarded Trenton Orbit with derisive criticism of Kearney. Kearney’s day job is as manager of the Trenton Farmers’ Market, and the board of directors for the Ewing establishment also issued a statement about the post. “We are aware of comments that were made by our manager on a different platform that do not reflect the values or standards of The Trenton Farmers Market,” the statement said. “We want to sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt or offended by these remarks. Racism and discrimination of any kind have no place in our workplace or our community. “We take this matter very seriously. We recognize that there is an issue, and we are addressing it internally to ensure this does not happen again. Our business is committed to fostering an environment of respect, inclusion, and accountability. “We appreciate those who brought this to our attention and thank our community for holding us to a higher standard. We remain dedicated to learning from this and doing better moving forward. “Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Board of Directors, The Trenton Farmers Market.” Business owners who rent space in the Trenton Farmers Market spoke out on Facebook and emailed The Trentonian, calling for accountability and action from the market’s board of directors. Trentonian Editor John Berry contributed to this report. Screenshot from Trenton Orbit on Facebook. ...read more read less
