Mikaela Shiffrin's Olympic drought continues after missing podium in giant slalom
Feb 15, 2026
Mikaela Shiffrin’s Olympic drought is still going.
The Colorado native was unable to medal in the giant slalom event on Sunday, finishing in 11th place with a total time of 2:14.42.
Shiffrin, the winningest World Cup skier in history, has now gone without a medal in her last eight events acr
oss the last two Winter Olympics. She came away empty-handed at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where she had three DNFs among her sixth events and finished as high as fourth. In Milan Cortina, she placed fourth in her first event, the team combined, with downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson.
The giant slalom has not been one of Shiffrin’s top events in recent years. While her 22 World Cup giant slalom wins are the most in history, she has not won it on the World Cup circuit since December 2023. She had built some momentum with a third-place finish in the giant slalom at her last pre-Olympic World Cup event in late January.
The 30-year-old has one last chance to step onto the podium in Milan Cortina. She is scheduled to compete in the slalom — perhaps her best event — Wednesday morning.
Italy’s Federica Brignone earned her second gold medal in her home country just 10 months after tearing her ACL. She finished with a 2:13.50, putting her 0.62 seconds of tied silver medalists Thea Louise Stjernesund of Norway and Sara Hector of Sweden.
Shiffrin was the top finisher among Team USA’s four skiers in the giant slalom. Paula Moltzan finished 15th (2:14.77), Nina O’Brien finished 20th (2:15.31) and AJ Hurt did not finish her first run.
