First signs of spring beginning to show across central Indiana INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After nearly a month of snow, bitter cold, and winter storms, central Indiana is finally starting to see the first subtle hints that spring is not too far away. While winter is far from finished, the recent warming trend and increasing daylight are beginning to wake up parts of the natural world that have been frozen in place for weeks. One of the earliest and most reliable signs of the seasonal shift is the appearance of snowdrops. These small white flowers are often the first to bloom, sometimes even pushing up through patches of melting snow. They typically begin showing up in late February, especially during mild stretches like the one arriving now. Their presence is a signal that the soil, while still cold, is starting to loosen its grip. Other early bloomers will not be far behind. Crocuses are usually next, adding small bursts of purple and yellow to gardens and landscaped areas as we move into early March. Daffodils tend to follow later in the month, bringing brighter color and more widespread blooms as temperatures continue to moderate. Beyond flowers, trees are also beginning their slow transition. While leaves are still weeks away, buds will gradually start to swell as daylight increases. Central Indiana has already gained noticeable daylight since the winter solstice, and that extra sunlight plays a major role in triggering plant and tree activity. Wildlife also responds to the changing season. Robins and other early migratory birds begin returning north, often seen searching for food on lawns softened by melting snow. Their arrival is another classic sign that winter’s grip is weakening. The warming temperatures expected over the next several days will accelerate these early indicators. Melting snow, softer ground, and milder afternoons will continue nudging the landscape toward spring, even if occasional cold snaps still lie ahead. For now, these first flowers, budding trees, and returning birds serve as small but meaningful reminders that longer days and warmer weather are slowly but surely on the way. ...read more read less
