I appreciate the Jan. 9 letter to the Star-Advertiser, “Chang’s appreciation of God is protected speech,” which rebuts my Jan. 6 submission, “Coaches should keep religious beliefs private.” The First Amendment’s protections pervade our society and demand this spirited examination. But pe
rhaps the author missed my letter’s last sentence, “Conversely, it’s important to recognize that privately funded universities like Notre Dame can freely exercise and advocate their religions.” Coach Timmy Chang was interviewed as the University of Hawaii’s head football coach (paid by our taxes), not as a private citizen. ...read more read less
