It was a loud, celebratory concert for these high school seniors, and it had the potential to be life-changing.  Forney ISD is partnering with a company, VU Scholarships, to help match colleges and universities with leftover scholarship money to students who could use it. The program costs th e kids and the school absolutely nothing. Forney ISD shares transcripts, grades and info on each student, colleges then select the students they want and assign a dollar amount. “The greatest thing about it is it opens doors that, you know, our kids may not even known we’re there,” said Justin Terry, Forney ISD Superintendent. Students were handed an envelope with a piece of paper inside showing how much “total” scholarship money they were offered. Most had numbers in the three-million mark, but that’s a total amount from 50 different schools. Kids will just attend one school, so the average scholarship total was a more realistic $50,000. “Yeah, that’s, that’s still, that’s crazy. That’s a that’s I, I’m still having trouble believing, believing 59 Universities are willing to give me 50k,” said Drew Salton, a high school senior. Salton wants to go to Texas Tech, then to law school at UT Austin. Now, there are 60 other schools throwing money at him, hoping he’ll give them a look.  “We came here tonight, I had no clue that it was going to be on this scale. And so I’m just thankful to Forney ISD for inviting this company and just investing in kids,” said Damon Salton, Drew’s Dad. Several other districts in the area are trying out this unique partnership. ...read more read less
