Jordan Stolz won his first-ever Olympic gold medal. The 21‑year‑old Wisconsin native dominated the men’s 1000m speed skating event on Wednesday, setting an Olympic record with a time of 1:06.28. Stolz entered the event as the world‑record holder (1:05.37) and a two‑time world champio n in the distance. After sweeping all five World Cup races in the 1,000 this season, he arrived at the Winter Games as the clear favorite. This was Stolz’s first of four scheduled events in Milan. With his recent dominance, it is possible he could leave Italy with four gold medals. After two rest days, he’ll return for the 500 meters on Saturday, followed by the 1,500 on Feb. 19 and the mass start on Feb. 21, the final day of Olympic speedskating. Stolz is aiming to join fellow Wisconsin native Eric Heiden as the only American — man or woman — to win three or more gold medals at a single Winter Olympics. Heiden captured five golds at the 1980 Lake Placid Games, the most ever won by any athlete in any sport at one Winter Games. Fellow American speedskaters Conor McDermott-Mostowy and Cooper McLeod joined Stolz on the ice. McDermott-Mostowy finished in 1:08.48 while McLeod was in 1:09.319. The Netherlands’ Jenning de Boo earned silver in the 1000m with a time of 1:06.78, while China’s Zhongyan Ning won bronze in 1:07.34 This story uses functionality that may not work in our app. Click here to open the story in your web browser. ...read more read less
