COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- A 77-year-old Colonial Heights woman is facing charges after police say she hit a child with her car Wednesday morning while they were running to their bus stop. Just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, officers with the Colonial Heights Police Department were calle d to the intersection of Elmwood Drive and Wildwood Avenue for report of a juvenile who was hit by a vehicle. Investigators determined that the juvenile, an elementary school-aged child, was hit by a driver while they were running in the roadway towards a bus stop. That driver, 77-year-old Gracie Swearingen of Colonial Heights, initially left the scene. However, she returned shortly thereafter. According to police, she told officers that she was "not aware that the juvenile had made contact with [her] vehicle." The child's parent, who was walking behind them, arrived at the scene moments after the impact took place. Thankfully, the child was not hurt.
