There were commentaries in The Park Record that I read this Saturday (Feb. 7). ONe was a column written by Ari Loannides. And Heather Bryant’s guest column is a thoughtful reminder to Parkites to be aware of the individuals in our community who may go missing in this perilous immigration enviro nment.  We are far enough into this nightmare to know that it is not only undocumented individuals who get picked up by what we sort of think ICE is, but also American citizens who are in the wrong place with the wrong color skin. Probable cause in the trump administration has taken a hike. Warrants? Who needs them? I spent decades in Park City and Summit County working with our community of immigrants. To this day, I have never asked a person what their legal status is and never will.  We have a hard-working community of people in the Hispanic community who are an integral part of the economy and culture of Park City. They need to be championed for their contributions.  I have participated in so many studies on the contributions of immigrantss to the Utah economy, I am not sure exactly when that started — late 1990s is my guess. Never once have they proved to be a drain on the people who live here.  I also have participated in studies and done my own research into the effects that immigrant communities have on crime. Again, no more than the dominant demographic.  I will go toe to toe with anyone on this, at any time.  Ari, would like to tell us how the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached non-violence and that those lines of well-dressed, well-mannered people of color were the ones who knew how to get things done?  John Lewis led the March 7, 1965. march in which he led 600 protesters across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. They were peaceful, Ari, and they were brutally attacked by state troopers using tear gas and clubs. John Lewis’s skull was fractured. He was the architect of “good trouble,” and it didn’t come without brutal consequences.  Which leads me to the letter to the editor written by Jerry Heck, of Oakley. I know of Jerry, and he is not new to the letters to the editor section of The Record. The title of this letter is “Keep ICE going.”  Jerry is hoping that President Trump enacts the Insurrection Act.  He states, “I have never consented to have my hard earned tax dollars provide a lifetime of multi-generational public assistance to international welfare tourists.” I could ask, and would like to know, how is that public assistance delivered? What I have found over the years is that the response is usually anecdotal. I don’t do anecdotal, and that usually follows those proclamations. Our beautiful Park City continues to evolve. I no longer live here, although much of my efforts are still within the city limits. We have always been a pretty good community with a pretty good record of assimilation.  Keep reaching out to your neighbors, follow what is going on, use critical thinking.  And to the students who walked out in a protest against ICE, good on ya. You make us all proud. Good trouble.  Shelley Vebber South Jordan The post Look out for each other appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
