(KRON) -- Jake Paul took to X on Monday and appeared to attempt to walk back comments he made criticizing Bad Bunny's appearance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in Santa Clara. On Sunday the influencer and professional fighter tweeted out a message calling on his 4.4 million X followers to skip the
Super Bowl halftime show and slamming Bad Bunny as a "fake American citizen."
"Turn off this halftime," Paul tweeted. "A fake American citizen performing who publicly hates America. I cannot support this."
Paul's tweet was widely derided with California Gov. Gavin Newsom blasting him as a "little MAGA snowflake."
‘Massachusetts Guy’ went viral for video about loving the Bay Area. Then his rental car got stolen
Progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also responded.
"Didn't you MOVE to Puerto Rico to avoid paying your taxes while kids across America go hungry?" she tweeted. "Meanwhile Benito actually funds low income kids' access to arts and sports programs, while you defund them."
"Of course you're mad. He makes you look small," the congresswoman who is of Puerto Rican descent added.
Even Paul's own brother, Logan Paul denounced the anti-Bad Bunny tweet, posting, "I love my brother but I don't agree with this."
"Puerto Ricans are Americans I'm happy they were given the opportunity to showcase the talent that comes from the island," the older Paul added.
In a series of follow-up tweets, Jake Paul suggested he wasn't calling Bad Bunny a fake American because he was Puerto Rican.
"The problem with my tweet is the word fake is being misinterpreted," he said. "He's not a fake citizen bc hes Puerto Rican and I love Puerto Rico and all Americans who support the country."
"Moreso Bunny is fake bc of his values and criticism of our great country," he added.
"To clarify: I wasn't calling anyone a 'fake citizen' because they're from Puerto Rico," he added in a separate follow-up tweet. "I live in Puerto Rico, and I love Puerto Rico. I have used by platform to support Puerto Rico time and time again and will always do so."
"But if you're publicly criticizing ICE who are doing their job and openly hating on America, I'm going to speak on it. Period," he added.
On Monday, Jake Paul appeared to try and further distance himself from his initial tweet, even suggesting that his account had been hacked.
"Guys i love bad bunny idk what happened on my twitter last night??" he tweeted.
Jake Paul, who lives in Puerto Rico, was in Italy Monday where his fiancé, Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam, won the gold medal in the women's 1,000 meters speedskating event.
