Two men were arrested and one is still wanted after a lengthy investigation discovered that two smoke shops were selling high-potency THC products to underaged people, according to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation began in early 2025 after community members in bot h Reading and West Reading reported that NYC Convenience Store and Prime Tobacco Zone were selling THC edibles to young people, officials said. The District Attorney’s Office reported that several juveniles became sick after they ate these high-potency products that were more than 0.3% THC by weight. According to authorities, this made the products classified as controlled substances under Pennsylvania law. Then, on Sept. 10, 2025, search warrants were obtained for each of the stores by the Berks County District Attorney Drug Task Force and the Borough of West Reading Police Department. That same day, law enforcement acted on the warrants and said that they seized about $200,000 worth of products from both stores combined. Among the items seized from Prime Tobacco Zone on the 400 block of Penn Avenue in West Reading were: 8 vacuum-sealed bags of bulk marijuana (approximately 524 grams per bag) 136 canned soft drinks containing THC 249 individual packages of suspected marijuana (3.5 grams each) 91 individual packages of suspected marijuana (1.0 grams each) 110 individual packages of suspected marijuana (2.0 grams each) 1 clear plastic bag containing bulk marijuana From the NYC Convenience Store on the 1100 block of Rockland Street in Reading, officials seized: 14 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana bulk (52 grams per bag) 9 knotted bags of bulk marijuana (4.6 pounds total) 7 vacuum-sealed bags of bulk marijuana (7.4 pounds total) 9 large zip-top bags containing 679 packets of pre-packaged marijuana (7.9 pounds total) 41 packets of pre-packaged marijuana (2.5 pounds total) Loose marijuana (38.5 grams) 2 large Ziploc bags containing 348 packets of pre-packaged marijuana (2.7 pounds total) Bulk packaging material (approximately 29,768 individual plastic packets) A large quantity of pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes and edible THC products Months after the search warrants, on Feb. 9, 2026, a judge granted arrest warrants for 39-year-old Mohammed Hamood Abiah, 38-year-old Joshua Velez and 29-year-old Aljenis Kelvin Reyes. Abiah and Velez were taken into custody on Monday and are being held at the Berks County Central Processing Center while they wait for arraignment.
