Potholes to come as snow melts away
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Snow melt finally will pick up this week in central Indiana with above-freezing afternoons.
As we get rid of the snow, potholes will increase across the state.
Indianapolis has had 15 days in a row of snow depth of 4 inches or mo
re for the first time since 2014. All of the snow stretches back to the Jan. 25-26 winter storm.
Pothole formation
Snow melt, or any day with rain, allows water to seep through cracks. Water pools under the surface of the road.
Overnight low temperatures are forecast to be below freezing this week. Any water under the road freezes and expands. The weakness in the roadway is forced upward.
Above-freezing temperatures in the afternoon result in the ice melting, and that’s where you get gaps to form under the road.
Constant traffic breaks down the road, allowing potholes to form.
