Behind career games from freshman Jazzy Davidson and sophomore Kennedy Smith, USC went on the road on Sunday and defeated Illinois 70-62 in a Big Ten Conference women’s game in Champaign, Illinois. Davidson had a career-best 27 points, plus eight rebounds and eight assists. Smith, from Etiwanda Hi gh, scored 20 points and had six blocked shots. Kara Dunn added 14 points, and Laura Williams had six points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans (15-9, 7-6). Smith scored seven in a 9-0 run to open the game, and Davidson had eight points and four of her eight assists in a 23-13 opening quarter. USC continued to surge in the second quarter and led 32-15 after a 3-pointer from Smith. USC led 37–23 at halftime after holding the Illini to just 10 points in the period. It was more of the same in the third quarter as a jumper from Davidson led a 6-0 surge to start the quarter, as the star frosh scored six of the team’s 14 points in the quarter. Smith and Davidson combined for seven points as the Trojans took a 58-39 lead with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter before the Illini surged.Illinois cut the lead to 64-58 with 2:09 remaining, but Davidson went 4-4 from the line and Smith knocked down 1 of 2 in the final 1:16 to secure the win.
