CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn took a major crash at the Olympic downhill race in Cortina D’Ampezzo on Sunday, ending what may be the final race of her career.
Racing bib 13, Vonn crashed at the fourth gate, 13.4 seconds into her run after losing control on the first jump and tw
isting to land perpendicular to the hill. She was down for more than ten minutes before a medical helicopter evacuated her from the slope.

“This is part of the sport. She came here with a broken knee, she loves this sport, she knew this could happen. We all love her,” the announcer said to the crowd watching on in the utter silence that followed everyone’s shouts of horror watching her twist around herself in the crash.
Vonn did not move from her position as medical personnel met her on the pitch. Her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, and family watched on in concern from the stands.
Breezy Johnson, seated in first place, cried for her teammate from the finish. She waved to the broadcast crossing her fingers in support for the injured Vonn.
The fall came just nine days after Vonn crashed in Crans-Montana, where she ruptured her ACL. While Vonn’s Olympic dream may have ended, the race resumed nearly 20 minutes later with Austrian Mirjam Puchner, wearing bib 14.
Much like Johnson’s tears after her otherwise successful run, the formerly excited atmosphere of the crowd never fully recovered after the course hold. The stands stayed silent through Puchner’s descent, and while the crowd briefly found its voice for Italy’s Sofia Goggia, the energy never fully returned.
