BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — IU took down Wisconsin, 78-77, in overtime.
Lamar Wilkerson hit two free throws with less than three seconds left in overtime to give the Hoosiers the lead, which they did not give up.
Wilkerson scored the Hoosiers’ last 10 points of the game and had a team-h
igh 25 points.
Late game execution was an issue for the Hoosiers. IU led the entire game until a John Blackwell bucket gave Wisconsin the lead with less than two minutes to go in regulation. Wisconsin went on a 10-0 run late in the second half and held a four point lead before Wilkerson made four free throws in the last minute to send the game to overtime.
IU did not make a field goal for the final 5:32 in regulation, and its only made basket in overtime came with 30 seconds to go.
Despite the issues, IU head coach Darian DeVries was happy with the fight his team showed.
“We get a double-digit lead there late, we don’t need to go to overtime,” DeVries said. “But again, they found a way. They didn’t give into it. They kept fighting. They kept in the huddle encouraging one another, and I think that’s a sign of a veteran team. They didn’t panic inside the huddle. They just knew you’ve just got to make that next play, and they were able to do that.”
“You can tell with a senior group like this, obviously we don’t want to blow leads and go to overtime and do all that, but we still battled together and got it done,” IU guard Conor Enright added.
IU led 36-30 at halftime and led by as many as 14 in the game.
Sam Alexis was excellent for IU, scoring a season-high 19 points on 9-10 shooting.
“I thought Sam was tremendous that second half,” DeVries said. “We were able to take advantage of a few switches. That’s why they were able to stay in front of us a little better. They were switching a little more. We were able to throw it inside. I thought the guys did a good job, ran a few things to try to get it to him, but they got it to him, and Sam did the rest from there. He had five blocks on the game, eight rebounds. That’s a big night.”
“He’s been awesome,” Enright said. “I think today was a big example because we were kind of low energy and flat because guys have been sick the last couple days. I think Sam came out and set the tone right away, offensive rebounds, defense, and he picked it up in the second half too.”
Next up for the Hoosiers is a home game against Oregon on Monday. IU is honoring the undefeated 1975-76 Hoosiers at halftime, the 50th anniversary of the team. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
