(KRON) -- The Sebastopol Police Department said there is no ongoing safety threat to the community after gunshots were fired Friday afternoon near the City Plaza. No injuries were reported. SPD said officers responded just after 1:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Weeks Way and learned that an off-duty S anta Rosa police officer had already detained the suspect. "Through further investigation, officers determined the firearm discharge originated from a handgun inside the suspect’s backpack and that the discharge was unintentional," Sebastopol police said in a social media post. Police said officers located a .22 caliber handgun inside the backpack of the suspect, identified as 56-year-old Justin Wade Edwards, a convicted felon. Methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, metal knuckles, and a hidden straight blade knife were also discovered in Edwards' backpack, according to SPD. Photo courtesy of Sebastopol Police Department. Edwards was taken into custody and faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, and several felony charges, including the following: Felon in possession of a firearm Carrying a concealed firearm Negligent discharge of a firearm Carrying a concealed dirk or dagger Possession of metal knuckles Prohibited person in possession of ammunition Possession of a controlled substance while armed "We appreciate the community member who reported the incident and commend the off-duty Santa Rosa Police officer for their quick and professional actions," added police. ...read more read less
