MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — The widow of a former Delaware County Sheriff’s deputy has filed a wrongful death complaint against the trucking companies and drivers involved in the fatal crash that cost the corporal his life. On Nov. 12, Cpl. Blake Reynolds was helping a broken-down semitruck ne ar mile-marker 247 when his patrol vehicle was hit by a northbound semitruck. Reynolds was outside his vehicle at the time of the collision and was struck during the impact, according to a statement by Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley. Despite the best efforts of first responders, Reynolds did not survive his injuries. His wife, Allison Reynolds, is suing multiple parties, including: Parrish Dedicated Services, Parrish Leasing Inc., AG Deliverers LLC, the driver of the disabled semi, and the semi driver who hit Cpl. Reynolds. She is also demanding a jury trial in the case. A tort claim filed Jan. 30 says the striking driver was operating a Prairie Farms semitruck when he collided with the stopped semitruck and Reynolds’ stopped patrol car, “propelling him a distance from the point of impact.” The claim accuses the driver of operating at a “speed unreasonable under the circumstances” and of failing to yield to emergency or law enforcement vehicles. Alison Reynolds is also suing the driver of the stranded semi, claiming their actions, listed below, ultimately caused Blake Reynolds’ death: Operating the Volvo Tractor-Trailer rig while fatigued, inattentive and distracted Operating the Volvo Tractor-Trailer rig at a speed unreasonable under the circumstances Failing to maintain control of the Volvo Tractor-Trailer rig Operating the Volvo Tractor-Trailer rig off the paved portion of U.S. Interstate 69 Leaving the 2006 Great Dane trailer obstructing the right-hand, northbound lane of travel on U.S. 6 Interstate 69, creating a hazard to the motoring public, emergency responders, and law enforcement personnel, including Corporal Blake Reynolds. The claim also says was “further careless and negligent” in a number of other ways, including: Failing to take steps to remove his disabled semitruck from the right-hand lane of I-69. Failing to summon emergency responders. Failing to warn other drivers of the hazard via CB radio. Failing to deploy emergency reflectors and/or flares. Failing to take other measures to “signal, warn, or advise motorists of the obstruction in the roadway.” No criminal charges have been filed against either driver. ...read more read less
