Salinas man who used daughter as ‘human shield’ convicted: DA
Feb 05, 2026
(KRON) -- A Salinas man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend and used their 7-year-old daughter as a "human shield" during a police standoff was convicted this week on a slew of charges, prosecutors said.
Oscar Villareal, Jr., 46, pleaded "no contest" to charges including domestic violence, false impriso
nment of a hostage, and assaulting a police officer. He will be sentenced to serve 20 years in prison, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors said the case stems from a May 16, 2025 incident that began when Villareal went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, "Jane Doe 1," who had custody of their daughter, "Jane Doe 2."
"Villareal and Jane Doe 1 argued about custody issues. Jane Doe 1 agreed Villareal could take Jane Doe 2 to the park to play. Leaving Jane Doe 2 at the park, Villareal returned to Jane Doe 1’s house, pushed her to the ground, and stabbed her once in the neck with a folding knife. Jane Doe 1 was on the phone with a female relative of Villareal’s, who overheard the stabbing. Villareal then told the relative that he killed Jane Doe 1 and was on his way to kill her and everyone in her house," the DA's office wrote.
The relative called police after Villareal arrived and banged on their front door. He then forced the relative's husband to drive him away in a truck, pick up Villareal's daughter, and travel to Gonzales in south Monterey County, prosecutors said.
When a California Highway Patrol officer pulled the truck over, Villareal rammed the truck into the CHP officer's car and nearly struck the officer. A high-speed chase ensued, with the little girl still in the truck. A CHP officer successfully executed a maneuver that disabled the truck and forced it up against the guardrail.
"Villareal refused to exit the truck, claiming he had a loaded firearm and would kill himself. He moved Jane Doe 2 from her position in the backseat into Villareal’s lap, despite multiple officers pointing firearms at him," the DA's office wrote.
As the daughter was being used as a shield, a certified hostage negotiator with Salinas Police Department was able to de-escalate the situation and take Villareal into custody.
His ex-girlfriend survived the stabbing, and his daughter was not injured.
Monterey County Judge Mark Hood will sentence Villareal on March 5.
