A 49-year-old man who, police believe, was behind the wheel of an SUV that struck and critically injured a man in a hit-and-run incident in Northeast Philly on Wednesday, is now in custody, officials announced.
On Thursday morning, officials said that police have apprehended a driver believed to
be responsible after a 30-year-old man was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado while attempting to cross Torresdale Avenue in Northeast Philly at about 5:41 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officials said the incident happened as the driver was attempting to make a right turn onto Devereaux Avenue while traveling south on Torresdale Avenue.
After striking the pedestrian, officials said, the driver sped away in the Silverado.
But, based on information from witnesses, officials said that police were able to track down the vehicle involved and the driver — who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on — was apprehended outside of his residence shortly after the incident.
The man who was stuck, officials said, suffered a severe head injury and has been hospitalized in critical condition.
The suspected driver is in police custody while, officials said, he awaits formal charges in this incident.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to police.
