Southlake Olympic superfan reflects on 13th Games
Feb 04, 2026
The Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics brings big memories for Tim Schuetz.
Over the past 40 years, the Southlake man has attended 13 Olympic Winter and Summer Games.
He calls himself an Olympiad spectator.
“When you are at the games, it is about us, the world, coming togeth
er to see the very best performance,” Schuetz said. “They’re all unique. They’re all fantastic, and they all have things that stick out.”
He named just some of his favorites.
“Sitting six rows off of Mary Lou Retton’s perfect 10 at the vault. The Dream Team in Barcelona in 1992. I saw Usain Bolt over and over again in Rio. And the list goes on,” Schuetz said.
His memories began at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. It was the Olympics that the United States would boycott to protest the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Since it was his first opportunity to go through, he said he couldn’t miss it. Even though he said he was interrogated by the police twice.
Now, it’s a family affair. Scheutz and his daughter Cris have taken a handful of Olympic trips together.
“I think that’s why he likes the Olympics so much. He’s such a social person. He gets to talk to all these new people when we go. He just loves it,” Cris said. “I always want to have something that is a really strong tie that will always link me back to family. It’s just something that always brings me back to him.”
The 2026 Winter Olympics officially begin with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, Feb. 6, on NBC 5. Competition begins on Wednesday with curling.
