Air Force men’s basketball outscores Grand Canyon in second half, but falls to Lopes in first meeting

In the first meeting between the two basketball programs, Grand Canyon dominated Air Force from start to finish.
The host Lopes led the entire game at Global Credit Union to come out with an 81-57 win over the Falcons on Tuesday night. Grand Canyon led by 30 at halftime, but the Falcons had a b
etter second half to outscore Grand Canyon 39-33.
“I think we came out with more energy in the second half,” freshman Riley Dering said on KVOR 740 AM. “We were taking it personally, just playing harder overall. That contributed to playing better as a team.”
Dering led three players in double figures with a career-high 15 points in a career-high 23 minutes, followed by freshmen Lucas Hobin and Ethan Greenberg with 12 and 11, respectively.
Grand Canyon’s Makaih Williams and Brian Moore Jr. scored 15 points apiece, followed by Jaden Henley with 13 and Evan Boisdur with 10. The Lopes led by as many as 38 points in the second half (73-35).
Grand Canyon (15-7, 8-3 Mountain West) beat the top two teams in the conference, Utah State and San Diego State, in January.
Air Force (3-19, 0-11) had 18 turnovers, 13 turnovers in the first half, and finished with 39% shooting from the field while the Lopes shot 52%.
A 24-5 run in the last five minutes and 35 seconds of the first half helped the Lopes create a comfortable 48-18 lead at the half. Air Force went seven minutes without a point in the first half.
The Falcons return to Clune Arena on Saturday to face second-place San Diego State at 6 p.m.
