Salem Reporter Town Hall: Student Reading Crisis
*Thursday, Feb. 5: Salem Reporter is hosting a free town hall about the student reading crisis at the Elsinore Theatre. It will feature expert panelists including Andrea Castañeda, superintendent of the Salem-Keizer School District; Dana Nerenberg, director of the Oregon Center for Early Literacy and Learning Success; and Jessica DeFrancisco, third-grade teacher at Sumpter Elementary School. The event starts at 6 p.m., and doors open at 5:30 p.m. Free tickets can be reserved online. The theater is at 170 High St. S.E.
Kids and parents night
Friday, Feb. 6: The Kroc Center is hosting “Date Night” and “Parents Night Out” events in one evening. Kids ages 4 -12 can play games and climb a rock wall under supervision from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy a salsa dance lesson featuring mocktails paired with chips and salsa, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Registration for “Date Night” is $35 for a non-member pair, or $25 for a member pair. The “Parents Night Out” event costs $25 for non-members and $15 for members. Space is limited and spots can be reserved online. The center is at 1865 Bill Frey Dr.
Eagles tribute band
Friday, Feb. 6: The Eagle Eyes, an Eagles tribute band, will take the Elsinore stage Friday. The band hails from Vancouver, Canada, bringing hits from the California rock band to stages across North America. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets range $30 – $40 when bought online, or $5 more the day of the show. The theater is at 170 High St. S.E.
Valentine’s Day markets:
Wavra Farms
*Friday, Feb. 6: Over 55 vendors will sell jewelry, jarred goods, baked treats, crafts and more at an evening Cupid’s Night Out market at Wavra Farms. When not shopping, visitors can purchase a slice of wood-fired pizza from Cascadia Pizza or a glass of wine or beer from Snow Peak Brewing. Raffle prizes will be drawn during the event. The market runs from 5 – 8 p.m. at 7882 Jordan St. S.E. Admission is free.
MadHouse pop up
*Saturday, Feb. 7: Local businesses and free services will be featured at a pop up market at the MadHouse roller rink, hosted by McPea Pod Pop Up. There will be free clothing and pantry items available with no strings attached. The first 20 people to visit the market will get a handmade, Valentine’s-themed clay prize. Admission is free. The market is 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 1335 Madison St. N.E.
Salem Center *Saturday, Feb. 7: Over 30 vendors selling flowers, jewelry, clothing, desserts and other goods will feature at the Salem Center’s Valentine’s market. The market will also have a “kids zone” with crafts, balloon art and music. Admission is free. The market runs from 12 – 5 p.m. The mall is at 401 Center St. N.E.
Dark fantasy market
Saturday, Feb. 7: Authors and oddities vendors will converge at Grand Theatre for a dark fantasy-themed market put on by Market for the Strange. The “Dark Desires Twisted Tails” market will feature local authors reading excerpts from their works. The market will run from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is $5, and tickets can be purchased online in advance. The theater is at 187 High St. N.E.
Self Care Saturday
*Saturday, Feb. 7: Sample skin care products, chocolates, coffee, wine and more at a Valentine’s-themed event at LifeSource Natural Foods. The event, called “Self Care Saturday,” will run from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Flash sales will run all day Saturday. The store is at 2649 Commercial St. S.E.
Bob Marley tribute concert
*Saturday, Feb. 7: The Yard Food Park will have a tribute concert to Bob Marley a day after the reggae musician’s birthday. The food park has 18 food carts, as well as espresso and a full bar. The event will feature Iron Prophecy, a Portland reggae band. It runs 6 – 9 p.m. at 4106 State St. Admission is free.
