UPDATE: 8:30 p.m. LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Lexington Police Department has released new information about an officer-involved shooting that shut down part of Alumni Drive Tuesday afternoon. According to the department’s release, officers first became aware of the suspect after a licens e plate reader alerted them to a vehicle connected to a man wanted on multiple felony warrants out of North Carolina. Police confirmed those warrants with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, which included charges such as first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation and discharging a weapon into occupied property. Officials say the warrants were active and eligible for nationwide extradition. Police analysts tracked the vehicle through the department’s Real-Time Intelligence Center, with help from air support and a drone, as it moved through the city. Officers attempted a traffic stop around 4:24 p.m. near the intersection of Alumni Drive and Yellowstone Parkway. During that encounter, three officers fired toward the vehicle. Police say a gun was located near the suspect. The suspect — a 40-year-old man — was seriously injured. Officers provided medical aid at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt. Police say body-worn cameras were activated during the incident. The shooting is now being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team. Lexington Police’s Public Integrity Unit will also conduct an internal review. As is standard procedure, the involved officers have been placed on administrative assignment during the investigation. Police acknowledged that several videos of the incident are circulating on social media and are asking anyone who recorded footage or witnessed the shooting to come forward. Tips can be shared by calling 859-258-3600 or anonymously through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers. ORIGINAL STORY: LEXINGTON, Ky.
