Baltimore Police Department launches dedicated traffic safety team
Feb 03, 2026
Last month, the Baltimore Police Department launched a new team focused on reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries and dangerous driving behaviors.
The department’s new Citywide Traffic Team launched Jan. 18 and is tasked with ensuring the safety of all road users, including motorists
, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
“The Citywide Traffic Team envisions Baltimore as a city where everyone can travel safely, regardless of neighborhood, mode of transportation, or time of day, and where traffic-related deaths and serious injuries are preventable, unacceptable, and ultimately eliminated through shared responsibility and effective public safety practices,” the team’s mission statement reads.
Their work will involve enforcing traffic laws to decrease crashes; speeding; impaired, distracted, reckless and/or aggressive driving; violations at intersections, school zones, and pedestrian crossings; and Maryland residents improperly using Virginia license plates.
So far, officers have initiated more than 400 traffic stops and issued nearly 370 moving violations. Those include 75 repair orders, 334 warnings, 10 parking citations, one DUI arrest, and 15 towed vehicles, as of Jan. 27 data.
This comes after BPD saw a 75% increase in traffic enforcement in 2025, including almost 11,000 citations given to Maryland drivers with Virginia license plates.
The team will use crash data and community feedback to inform their operations and deploy resources to areas of greatest need.
They will also work with city agencies, transportation planners, public health partners, and community organizations to improve safety through education, outreach and long-term solutions.
