FCPS students out again as district marks sixth snow day and reviews NTI costs
Feb 03, 2026
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Students in Fayette County Public Schools are home again Tuesday as the district called another snow day, citing lingering ice and snow on roadways across the county.
This latest closure makes six snow days so far this winter. The district has also already use
d four nontraditional instruction (NTI) — or remote learning — days.
During Monday’s Board of Education action meeting, Superintendent Demetrus Liggins asked board members for feedback as he looks at the financial impact of continuing to use NTI days.
Liggins explained that the Kentucky Department of Education allows districts to use up to 10 NTI days each year, but FCPS only budgeted for four. Each NTI day costs the district about $223,000 in its child nutrition and food service budget. While the district saves roughly $9,000 a day in diesel fuel when buses aren’t running, that savings doesn’t come close to covering the lost meal funding.
Remote learning days don’t have to be made up at the end of the year. Traditional snow days, however, could extend the school calendar — but they also allow the district to recoup that daily nutrition funding.
Liggins said he plans to bring funding options and next steps to the board during its planning session next Monday as winter weather disruptions continue.
