Immigrant rights groups are planning to use the national spotlight of the Super Bowl to denounce U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and its tactics. The move comes amid growing concern ICE will use the game being held Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara as a show-of-force moment while the world is watching. The Department of Homeland Security confirms ICE agents will be among the federal agencies attending the Super Bowl. There is fear in San Jose about what the law enforcement’s presence will mean. Immigrant supporters said they will be watching and are ready to respond. A group of Native Americans on Monday kicked off a week of immigrant rights rallies with a prayer. Dozens of people gathered at Plaza de Cesar Chavez in San Jose to condemn recent immigration raids across the country and the tactics ICE is using. The group also marched to the San Jose Civic Auditorium. San Jose Councilman Peter Ortiz said he was told by the Bay Area Host Committee that ICE would not engage in deportation operations. But days ago the Department of Homeland Security reaffirmed ICE would at least be present at the game. “This administration is different. They have never followed the law to the letter. They’re unpredictable,” Ortiz said. “I don’t put it past this administration since the eyes of the world are on Santa Clara County, to send a message to the communities that have already been under attack.” For years, the Department of Homeland Security has been leading the security measures at the Super Bowl, so Ortize knows there will be a federal presence this week. “I still have questions. What’s going to happen after the Super Bowl? When are these federal officers going to be leaving the area? There’s still a lot of vulnerability left in or community,” Ortiz said.
