2-2-26-Tricoci University INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Tricoci University of Beauty Culture highlighted the cultural and historical significance of African hair braiding Monday as part of Black History Month. Rep. Tempest Golden and models Patricia Germany and Jewel Patterson demonstrated how the tra ditional art form has evolved into modern forms of self-expression and protective styling. The demonstration emphasized that hair braiding is deeply rooted in African culture, where it historically signified age, religion, marital status and social rank. Tricoci University, founded in 2004, aims to meet growing demand for upscale salon professionals by teaching advanced technical skills alongside traditional cosmetology training. Hair braiding spans centuries and has been used as a method of communication and survival. Golden, an admissions adviser at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture, said the practice played a vital role during slavery in the United States, with braided patterns sometimes used to convey information such as escape routes, tribal identity, marital status and wealth. Beyond its historical significance, braiding remains a versatile form of self-expression across age groups and serves an important role in hair health, particularly during seasonal changes. Braided styles allow for creativity while also functioning as protective styles that reduce the need for frequent salon visits. Germany and Patterson modeled the differences between traditional and modern braiding techniques. Germany wore a modern style featuring individual box braids with added twists and human hair accents. Golden noted that some contemporary styles, including knotless braids, are designed to reduce scalp tension for individuals with sensitivity. Depending on hair length and the number of stylists involved, these intricate styles can take between six and eight hours to complete. The university was founded by beauty industry veteran Mario Tricoci, who previously established a chain of salons and day spas before launching the school. The institution offers training in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and teacher education, with an emphasis on professional ethics and advanced technical skills. Golden said the university focuses on inclusive instruction that applies to all students, regardless of background. Students are encouraged to develop their own creative ideas or work from client inspiration while learning techniques for maintaining and styling all hair types.
